Lobus Azygos Pulmonis Dextri: A Cross-sectional Cadaveric Study on Azygos Lobe in Western Maharashtra

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The research involved adult human cadavers, consisting of both males and females of Indian ethnicity, aged between 32 and 86 years, sourced from the institute's voluntary body donation initiative.Approval was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC clearance no.IEC/2022/523) in August 2022. Inclusion and Exclusion CriteriaCadavers with evidence of thoracic surgery, post-traumatic/damaged lungs, and metastatic growth distorting the lung and causing significant pathological changes were excluded from the study. Data AnalysisThe IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows, version 20.0, published in 2011 by Armonk, NY, was utilized.Descriptive statistics, including the mean, standard deviation, and range, were used to summarize the data. IntroductIonThe azygos lobe is an uncommon anatomical variant found in the right lung, distinguished by a small accessory lobe situated between the azygos vein and the right upper lobe. This variant arises during embryonic development due to the unusual pathway of the azygos vein, which occurs within a four-layered pleural septum in the superior lobe of the lung, resulting in the "azygos lobe," also referred to as "lobus azygos pulmonis dextri."It is important to note that this structure is not a true lobe, as it is merely a distinct section of the superior lobe that does not possess its own bronchi, arteries, or veins. 1 The azygos lobe is found in the right lung and is more frequently observed in males.Although the azygos lobe itself is generally not considered to cause any inherent pathology, certain factors should be considered during surgery. The lobe may obstruct an extrapleural access route to the esophagus during thoracotomy and increase the likelihood of neurovascular injury during thoracoscopic procedures, particularly to the phrenic nerve, which can become trapped in the fissure. 2 Understanding the prevalence and anatomical features of the azygos lobe in this area is crucial for accurate diagnosis, surgical planning, and the interpretation of imaging studies. Thus, this cross-sectional cadaveric study aims to investigate the prevalence, morphology, and clinical significance of the azygos lobe in a population from Western Maharashtra.
