Infants' Representations of Socially Engaged People

Year: 2024
Type: preprint
Abstract: Do younger infants better individuate people who are socially engaging, relative to people who are not? There is evidence that 2-year-old toddlers learn words better from people who are socially engaging (Breitfeld et al., 2024), and that from birth, infants are sensitive to whether people are gazing towards them (e.g., preferring to look at people who are looking at them; Farroni et al., 2002). We designed the present experiment to test the possibility that 7- to 10-month-old infants better individuate people who are socially engaging.
