One step conversion of tert-butyl ester to corresponding acyl chloride by thionyl chloride using water-free acetonitrile as solvent
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A newly developed one step method for synthesizing acyl chloride from tert-butyl ester is reported. This method utilizes water-free acetonitrile as solvent and thionyl chloride as the chlorinating agent to generate acyl chloride under mild conditions in nearly quantitative yield. The method features wide substrate scope in excellent yields. The simplicity, high efficiency, and safety of this approach make it a promising alternative for acyl chloride synthesis. A plausible Ritter-like reaction mechanism is proposed for this conversion.
