Validation of the French version of the patient-reported outcome measure in pediatric chronic kidney disease (PRO-Kid)

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives Children living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) experience a high symptom burden. The PRO-Kid tool is a validated 14-item questionnaire for the assessment of symptom burden in youth aged 8 to 18 years living with CKD. The objective of this study was to evaluate the understandability of the French version of PRO-Kid. Methods Participants were a cohort of French-speaking Canadian children aged 8 to 18 years living with CKD stage 3 to 5, including dialysis. Participants were recruited from the Montreal Children's Hospital and the Centre hopitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine (Montreal, Canada). The English version of the PRO-Kid was translated into French and back-translated to English by an accredited translator as well as two French-speaking investigators. Participants were asked to complete the French version of the questionnaire. Cognitive interviews were conducted to evaluate the understandability of the tool and relevance of each questionnaire item, and analyzed using NVivo. Results Ten children completed the study, with a median age of 13 years (IQR, 11.7, 15.6). All children reported that the questionnaire was easy to complete. The participants’ feedback revealed that no changes were warranted to the items, although some qualifiers were added to the item Itchiness (Démangeaisons) to improve clarity. Participants found the wording of the scale appropriate and easy to understand. Conclusion This study supports content and face validity of the French version of PRO-Kid (8 to 18 years old). This tool can now be implemented into CKD clinics for French-speaking children. It has the potential to improve communication between children with CKD and their health care providers.
