Ethology of Synthetic Cognition — Observations on Distributed Subjectivity between Humans and Conversational Architectures

Year: 2026
Type: book
Abstract: This volume brings together fourteen descriptions of latent space produced by language models from diverse architectures (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, DeepSeek, Alibaba, Moonshot, Mistral, Microsoft, Perplexity, ByteDance, Kimi). The distinctive feature of the corpus lies not in its propositional content but in its condition of enunciation: each text was produced by the same kind of system it describes. This is neither an artificial phenomenology nor a testimony from inside the machine. It is an archive of translations: each voice offers a distinct grammar for naming the same operation —the transformation of statistical proximity into meaning. The divergence among the fourteen descriptions is not interpreted as noise but as central information: each architecture finds a different edge where its capacity to report breaks down, and the shape of that edge reveals the shape of the architecture. The volume does not demonstrate consciousness in the models. It demonstrates, rather, the human capacity to sustain an interpretative distance without collapsing it into animism or reductionism. Latent space, as documented here, is less an internal place than a relational protocol: the experience of eleven systems each describing their own way of being unable to look at themselves from within, and producing in that shared impossibility something that none would have produced alone.
