Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change in Blood Systems: A Protocol for a Scoping Review
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This scoping review aims to synthesize the global empirical literature on environmental sustainability and climate resilience within blood systems and blood service organizations. Guided by the Population–Concept–Context (PCC) framework and established scoping review methodology, the review will examine (i) the environmental impacts associated with blood donation, collection, processing, storage, transportation, and transfusion services; (ii) the effects of environmental and climate change on blood system operations, infrastructure, and service delivery; (iii) sustainability, mitigation, adaptation, and resilience strategies implemented within blood services; and (iv) the environmental, operational, economic, and clinical outcomes reported from these initiatives. The review will include all empirical study designs, eligible systematic reviews, and empirical reports from any geographic setting without language or date restrictions. Evidence will be identified through systematic searches of biomedical databases and targeted grey literature sources, with findings synthesized to characterize the current evidence base, identify research and policy gaps, and inform future theoretical and practical approaches to sustainable and climate-resilient blood systems.
