Local Wisdom in Use: Batak Toba Agricultural Proverbs from Dairi

Abstract: This study explores metaphorical structures in Batak Toba agricultural proverbs and their role in shaping moral development, social behaviour, emotional regulation, and spirituality. Using a qualitative anthropolinguistic approach, twelve validated proverbs were analysed with insights from nine cultural informants in Dairi. Four agrarian based metaphorical themes of growth, social cohesion, discipline, and gratitude emerge as a moral ecology through which ecological knowledge structures ethical reasoning, social conduct, communal values, and the Batak Toba worldview.
