Radiofrequency ablation with a conventional solid tip catheter in contact with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator coil causing inadvertent ventricular fibrillation
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Catheter ablation using radiofrequency (RF) energy for both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias in patients with implantable cardioverted defibrillators (ICD) is common in clinical practice. With routine peri-procedural reprogramming of the device, clinically significant interaction between RF delivery and ICDs is rare. In some cases, the ablation target may reside in close proximity to ICD electrodes that are in contact with cardiac tissue. Several published case series have described inadvertent ventricular fibrillation (VF) induction related to monopolar RF delivery with a 9mm diameter lattice tip catheter in proximity to ICD coil for both atrial and ventricular arrhythmia targets, with some investigators reporting the use of a conventional solid tip RF catheter as a successful alternative in such cases.
