Abstract: This study examines the relationship between motivations and tourist satisfaction in second-tier cities, using León, Spain, as a case study. Through 384 questionnaire surveys and quantitative analysis, five motivational typologies were identified: utilitarian, cultural, work-related, passing through, and occasional. Whilst sociodemographic factors (age, gender, income) influence certain motivations, they do not directly determine satisfaction. Rather, satisfaction is primarily dependent on motivational type: utilitarian and occasional motivations correlate positively with satisfaction, whereas work-related and passing-through motivations have a negative impact. Cultural motivations, although redominant, demonstrate only a weak direct effect on satisfaction. It is concluded that, for second-tier destinations to remain competitive, they must adopt strategies grounded in motivational segmentation, prioritising the alignment of their offerings with key motivations — particularly for functional visitors — in order to enhance the overall visitor experience. The mediating role of service quality in shaping tourist satisfaction is also highlighted
