Abstract: The increasing use of algorithmic systems to manage work has substantially transformed the ways in which companies organise labour, make decisions, and interact with workers. In this context, the present study sought to analyse how Uber drivers perceive the management mechanisms employed by the platform and to understand the extent to which these mechanisms contribute to their exposure to psychosocial risk factors. To address this research question, an exploratory study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, involving 34 Uber drivers who completed the Work and Health Survey (INSAT).Of these participants, 10 also took part in individual interviews to ensure that the perspectives of those who engage with these systems on a daily basis were adequately represented. The findings indicate that drivers tend to perceive algorithmic management as lacking transparency, unfair, and difficult to dispute. This perception is closely linked to their lived work experiences, particularly the systematic transfer of occupational risks from the platform to the drivers in pursuit of corporate profit.Furthermore, participants reported exposure to a range of psychosocial risk factors, most notably feelings of exploitation and job insecurity, high work intensity, emotional demands arising from interactions with customers, and ethical and value-related conflicts. The study concludes that algorithmic management significantly shapes how Uber drivers experience their work by strongly influencing and constraining their decision-making processes under a framework of apparent autonomy.
