Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: We study learning resources and technologies in computing science (CS) higher education aiming to facilitate effective adoption for different groups of learners. We explore technology adoption and learning preferences in computing science higher education through (1) a scoping literature review focused on motivating open educational resources, and (2) a mixed methods study involving correlational students and educators surveys. 82% of surveyed students and 45% of surveyed educators are from African countries, providing us with valuable insights from a region whose voice is rarely present in related research. We explore access, usage, adoption, integration, and effectiveness through qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our survey results highlight reliable Internet access and cost as major challenges faced by students (47.0% and 18.1% of survey respondents, respectively) as well as educators (38.6% and 33% of survey respondents, respectively). Other challenges include learning curve, finding quality resources, data privacy, and ethical concerns. We also observed prevalence of generative AI tools and content platforms in student adoption patterns. Based on our findings, we recommend strategies for development and adoption of resources by educators, and parameters to consider in developing and adopting new educational tools.
