Quantum Advantage for Localization

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Quantum technologies can provide a substantial advantage for sensing, communication, control, and computing, over their classical counterparts. This paper assesses the possible quantum advantage for localization using range measurements. First, we provide a quantum Fisher information analysis for localization, showing the effect of range information and anchor geometry on the fundamental limits of quantum localization. We then demonstrate how the quantum advantage for ranging translates to the quantum advantage for position and orientation estimation. Results, obtained in a scenario with multiple anchors and multiple transmit-receive points for an agent, quantify the extent to which quantum technologies can enhance localization accuracy.
