Beyond Individualised Injustice: Rethinking Modern Trauma-Informed Care

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The transition to Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) has beneficially shifted clinical discourse from ‘What's wrong with you?’ to ‘What has happened to you?’ However, contemporary critique suggests that TIC has reached a ‘glass ceiling’. By remaining tethered to medicalised, deficit-based paradigms, TIC often frames individuals through a lens of permanent ‘brokenness’, while neglecting the sociopolitical factors – such as systemic inequality – that perpetuate distress. This paper argues for a systemic overhaul of UK institutional practices. It concludes that genuine recovery requires transcending trauma-informed awareness towards adopting a holistic, justice-oriented model. This approach restores not only the mind, but also the individual's sense of belonging and purpose within the social fabric, thereby replacing trauma capital with collective agency.
