Sci pop: science as aesthetic, theme and method in contemporary popular music

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Sci pop is a proposed term for commercial, contemporary pop songs that carry science as aesthetic, theme or method. A song qualifies on two conditions: it is a commercial pop song, and it carries an intention around science, actively sourcing inspiration from science - its subjects and knowledge, its methods, instruments and spaces, and its scientists and their social world - and bringing scientific thinking into the songwriting or the production. This sets it apart from songs that use nature, technology or society only as scenery, and from educational science songs that teach a topic directly. Sci pop is entertainment pop that carries science, in the way science fiction is entertainment cinema. Science has run through popular music for decades under no shared name. This founding statement fixes the term, defines it as a framework any artist can use, and gives it a single organising principle: a range from actual research to the fictional cultural imaginary. It sets out three dimensions through which science enters a song - the aesthetic, the theme and the method - across all the sciences; reviews the prior art; places sci pop among related genres; details two crafts, songwriting and music production; and names two roles the literature leaves unconsolidated: the scientist-musician and the musical science consultant. The term arose from the author's own practice as WELI, illustrated by two songs, Kangaroo Time and Cabra da Peste. Deposited as the permanent founding statement of sci pop.
