Abstract: Improving the energy efficiency of automotive transport is one of the key challenges of modern automotive engineering. A significant portion of the fuel energy in internal combustion engines is lost in the form of thermal energy dissipated through the cooling system and exhaust gases. Of particular interest is the use of thermoelectric generators, which make it possible to convert part of the thermal energy of exhaust gases into electrical energy. This paper presents a computational and analytical assessment of the energy potential for recovering thermal energy from the exhaust gases of the Chevrolet Cobalt passenger car, which is widely operated in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The influence of exhaust gas temperature and ambient temperature on the performance efficiency of a thermoelectric generator is investigated. An analysis of the thermal potential of Chevrolet Cobalt exhaust gases was carried out for various operating conditions and exhaust gas temperatures in the range of 300–800 °C, which is typical for different engine operating modes. The potential electrical power that can be generated through thermoelectric energy recovery was determined. It was established that the climatic conditions of the Republic of Uzbekistan have a significant impact on the operating temperature regime of the thermoelectric generator and on the energy conversion efficiency. The obtained results can be used in the development of energy-saving automotive systems and in the improvement of hybrid powertrain technologies.
