Commercial and logistical considerations for MCDR implementation

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Commercial and logistical considerations for MCDR implementation In this fourth article of the SEAO2-CDR mCDR series, Frank Meisel, Jill Storey and colleagues* discuss the challenges associated with scaling Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal approaches in a commercially viable and logistically feasible way (*See end of article for full list of authors). Arguably, one of the most significant barriers to Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) deployment at present is not technological readiness, but rather the absence of a reliable and durable demand for mCDR-based carbon offsets (1,2). Voluntary carbon markets have initiated early activity, including the first independently verified marine carbon removal credits, but they remain fragmented, with demand insufficient and too uncertain to support large-scale investment.
