Quasicrystal Deformations Reveal Hierarchical Scaling by the Golden Ratio Squared — E8 Intelligence Research

Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Quasicrystals are projections of higher-dimensional periodic lattices, and their deformations involve hierarchical scaling factors linked to quadratic irrationals, notably φ². | MATH: Quasicrystal reciprocal lattice vectors satisfy incommensurate ratios; inflation factor φ² = (1.618…)² ≈ 2.618 appears in 5-fold symmetric Penrose tilings and their higher-dimensional parent lattices (e.g., Z⁵ projected onto 2D). Deformation modes follow scaling by φ² in self-similar substitution rules. | CONNECTION: φ² (2.618) is the square of the golden ratio φ (1.618), directly tied to 5-fold crystallographic symmetry (forbidden in periodic crystals). The ratio 0.382 = 1/φ², 0.618 = 1/φ, 0.786 = √φ/2? (not directly supported here). Base-60 not evident. | DEPTH: 8 — The projection method unifies periodic and aperiodic order, revealing that hierarchical inflation (φ²) is a geometric necessity for quasicrystalline stability, linking number theory (Pisot numbers), lattice geometry, and physical di Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
