The Virtual Biospecimen Repository
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This work is submitted on behalf of the A2CPS Consortium. Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures (A2CPS) seeks to identify biomarkers and mechanistic signatures that predict the transition from acute to chronic postsurgical pain through a multisite clinical study spanning multiple perioperative timepoints. In service of this goal, one of the tasks of the A2CPS Data Integration and Resource Center (DIRC) is to manage the logistics of biospecimens collected and utilized across multiple sites. Key challenges include fragmented REDCap instances, disjointed shipping workflows, and the lack of a unified chain of custody. To address this, we created the Virtual Biospecimen Repository (VBR), a standards‑aligned, event‑driven platform that implements Common Fund Data Ecosystem (CFDE) Crosscut Metadata Model (C2M2) entities and workflow automation. The VBR includes a REST Application Programming Interface (API), an event model, a logistics model, and integration with REDCap, research cyberinfrastructure, and query services. The VBR improves traceability, reduces ingestion friction, and enables automated shipping and assay workflows. The VBR API is open‑source on GitHub with detailed documentation, making it a reusable blueprint for future multisite studies.
