Drylands and climate change – confronting the social and ecological challenges

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Dryland resources, in their broadest context, are under pressure.Climate change has been and will continue to be a significant challenge. The purpose of this study was to capture thoughts and ideas from key stakeholders (academics and practitioners), working in drylands to gather insights about further actions to better adapt to and mitigate against such change. This included a subset of questions to: (i) identify perceptions about the challenge, (ii) obtain opinions about gaps in information that would help to solve the issues raised; and, (iii) identify and synthesise the potential barriers to adoption and actions to help overcome them.A combined literature review and purposive survey were used as the methodology.Twentynine Chinese academics and practitioners specializing in drylands were surveyed to present their views, particularly regarding social and ecological issues. They identified that increasing temperature was the biggest challenge. This is currently being expressed as the expansion of desertification, land degradation, ecosystem decline and the stresses associated with the unavailability of water.Authentic policy, appropriate governance and multi-agency cooperation in up-skilling will aid success.
