Penrose Tilings as 5D Cubic Lattice Projections via Pentagrid Method — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Penrose tilings are aperiodic projections of a 5D cubic lattice onto 2D, enforcing 5-fold symmetry via algebraic conditions in a pentagrid method. | MATH: The pentagrid method uses 5 families of parallel lines spaced by 1, with slopes at angles \(2\pi k/5\) for \(k=0,\dots,4\). Each line family is offset by a phase \(\gamma_k\) satisfying \(\sum_{k=0}^4 \gamma_k = 0\) (mod 1). A tiling vertex exists where 3 lines intersect; the tile edges are determined by the indices of intersecting lines. The projection from \(\mathbb{Z}^5\) to \(\mathbb{R}^2\) uses a 2D subspace spanned by vectors \((1, \cos 2\pi/5, \cos 4\pi/5, \cos 6\pi/5, \cos 8\pi/5)\) and \((0, \sin 2\pi/5, \sin 4\pi/5, \sin 6\pi/5, \sin 8\pi/5)\). | CONNECTION: The golden ratio \(\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618\) and its reciprocal \(1/\phi \approx 0.618\) appear in the coordinates of the 5D lattice projection (e.g., \(\cos 2\pi/5 = (\phi-1)/2 = 0.309\), \(\cos 4\pi/5 = -\phi/2 \approx -0.809\)).
