Efficacy of Virtual Reality Games on Balance for Children with Choroid Plexus Papilloma: A Case Series

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A bstract Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP)—World Health Organization grade I is one of the rarest forms of all brain tumors, which increases intracranial pressure, resulting in hydrocephalus. Common clinical manifestations include headache, vomiting, irritability, poor balance, and incoordination. This case series presents an experimental study conducted on pediatric oncology patients in a South Indian multispecialty hospital who fulfilled the inclusion criteria for CPP. Five patients were included in this study, aged between 5 and 10 years. Clinical presentation varied with the tumor located in the fourth ventricle, third ventricle, and lateral ventricles as seen on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. The postoperative complications were predominantly motor disability (i.e., poor balance). Physiotherapy-based balance rehabilitation was provided using virtual reality (VR) games, following the same protocol for all five patients, performed for 6 weeks with three sessions/week and 20 min per session, focusing on balance-oriented games. This study concludes that VR was effective in improving balance, and overall ambulation was achieved for all five children.
