Microtubule Lattice Geometry Reveals Fibonacci Phyllotaxis and Quasicrystalline Symmetry — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Microtubule lattice geometry (13 protofilaments) exhibits Fibonacci phyllotaxis and quasi-crystalline symmetry, linking biological self-assembly to aperiodic crystallography. MATH: 13 protofilaments → Fibonacci number (F7=13); helical lattice parameters often involve golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618; phyllotaxis angles ≈ 137.5° (2π/φ²). Quasicrystal diffraction patterns show 5-fold symmetry forbidden in periodic crystals. CONNECTION: Fibonacci phyllotaxis ↔ golden ratio φ (0.618, 1.618, 2.618); 13 protofilament microtubule lattice ↔ quasi-crystalline 5-fold symmetry; base-60 not directly present but crystallographic root systems (e.g., H₂, H₃, H₄) underlie icosahedral quasicrystals. DEPTH: 8/10 — Directly ties Fibonacci numbers, golden ratio, and aperiodic lattice symmetry to a fundamental biological structure, suggesting a deep geometric principle in self-assembly.
