A Parent-Reported Graded Behavioral Screener Captures Variation in Dietary and Lifestyle Behaviors Beyond Binary Guideline-Based Assessment in Early Childhood

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objectives: Routine well-child visit (WCV) screening relies primarily on binary, guideline-based questions (meets vs does not meet recommendations), which may obscure meaningful variation in children’s dietary and lifestyle behaviors. Binary indicators fail to capture incremental behavioral change. We implemented a parent-reported Wellness Screener (WS) using graded responses to examine how behavioral measures related to diet, sedentary behavior, and eating self-regulation align with standard well-child visit indicators.
