Irrigation Without Drinking Water: Urban Migration, Gendered Water Inequities, and Health and Nutrition Impacts in Southern Peru
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives: Rapid rural-to-urban migration is reshaping intermediate cities in the Global South, often outpacing safe water and sanitation provision. In Majes, Southern Peru, population growth from uninhabited desert in the 1980s to over 200,000 residents by 2025 followed agricultural expansion and labor migration. We examined how structural water inequities are produced in this context and assessed implications for enteric disease, dietary practices, and gender dynamics.
