Urolithin A, a Gut Metabolite of Ellagic Acid, Reduces Fat Accumulation by Decreasing Food Intake and Upregulating Energy Expenditure in Caenorhabditis elegans
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives: Polyphenolic substances, ellagitannins and ellagic acid, are abundant in foods such as pomegranates and berries, and can be converted to urolithin A by gut bacteria. Previously, the health-promoting effects of urolithin A were reported, including reductions in body weight and hepatic lipid levels via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent mechanisms from in vivo and in vitro models. However, the direct effects of urolithin A on other mediators of lipid metabolism, such as food intake and energy expenditure, remains unclear.
