Rogers-Ramanujan Identities: Partitions, Modular Forms, and the Golden Ratio — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Rogers-Ramanujan identities connect integer partitions, modular forms, and the golden ratio via continued fractions and q-series. | MATH: The two identities: \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{q^{n^2}}{(q;q)_n} = \prod_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{(1-q^{5n-1})(1-q^{5n-4})}, \quad \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{q^{n^2+n}}{(q;q)_n} = \prod_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{(1-q^{5n-2})(1-q^{5n-3})} \] where \((q;q)_n = \prod_{k=1}^n (1-q^k)\). The Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction: \[ R(q) = \frac{q^{1/5}}{1+}\frac{q}{1+}\frac{q^2}{1+}\cdots = q^{1/5} \frac{(q;q^5)_\infty (q^4;q^5)_\infty}{(q^2;q^5)_\infty (q^3;q^5)_\infty} \] At \(q = e^{-2\pi/\sqrt{5}}\), \(R(q) = \frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{2} = \phi^{-1} \approx 0.618\). | CONNECTION: The golden ratio \(\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618\) and its reciprocal \(0.618\) appear as special values of the continued fraction. The modular form (Ramanujan delta function) is a level-1 weight-12 cusp form \(\Delta(q) = q \prod_{n=1}^\infty (1-q^n)^{24}\), link Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
