The Potential of Microlearning Technology for Developing Professional Competencies

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The present study examines the potential of microlearning technology for developing students’ professional competencies in higher education. Contemporary professional preparation requires learners to acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical, communicative, digital, reflective and self-regulatory skills that can be applied in changing workplace situations. Microlearning offers short, focused and accessible learning units organised around specific objectives and professional tasks. The study employed qualitative content analysis, comparative analysis and conceptual synthesis of theoretical and empirical research on microlearning, professional development and competence-oriented education. The findings indicate that microlearning can support the gradual acquisition of professional knowledge, practical skills, communication abilities, digital competence, self-directed learning and reflective behaviour. Its effectiveness depends on the logical sequencing of microcontent, its connection with authentic professional situations, the inclusion of active tasks and feedback, and its integration into broader educational programmes. The study concludes that microlearning should not replace comprehensive instruction but can serve as a flexible pedagogical instrument for reinforcing, practising and assessing particular components of professional competence.
