Belonging Why Do People Attach Themselves to a Society—or Detach from It

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Why do some people develop a deep attachment to their society while others gradually detach from it? This paper examines belonging as a multidimensional relationship between individuals and the societies in which they live. It argues that genuine belonging extends far beyond citizenship, geography, or cultural identity and is built upon justice, trust, recognition, shared meaning, participation, and confidence in a common future. The paper explores the psychological, social, political, economic, and moral dimensions of belonging, while also analyzing the processes through which exclusion, perceived injustice, polarization, and loss of future prospects can lead to detachment. It further examines the role of identity, institutional legitimacy, social trust, digital communities, and intergenerational expectations in shaping societal cohesion. By integrating perspectives from sociology, psychology, political science, public policy, and systems thinking, the paper presents belonging as a dynamic social feedback system and a fundamental societal capacity essential for social cohesion, resilient institutions, and sustainable development.
