Transport-Informed Sweat Glucose Sensing Toward Noninvasive Continuous Monitoring
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Accurate continuous glucose monitoring is essential for diabetes management and exercise-associated metabolic regulation. Sweat-based glucose sensing provides a promising noninvasive alternative, but its clinical translation is limited by the weak and variable sweat−blood glucose correlation. This spotlight reviews sweat-based glucose monitoring from a transport-informed perspective, focusing on glucose transport during secretion-coupled sweating and reverse iontophoresis. We highlight recent wearable platforms that combine high-performance glucose sensing with pH-based or cooperative Na+/pH calibration to correct transport- and interface-induced signal distortion. We further discuss key challenges, including long-term stability, individualized calibration, temporal lag, continuous sweat access, and large-scale clinical validation, toward reliable noninvasive continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).
