Delayed conception or sildenafil prevents endothelial dysfunction in pregnant rats after renal ischemia-reperfusion

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The relationship of acute kidney injury (AKI) and vascular function in females is relatively unknown. Endothelial dysfunction is a key mediator of adverse pregnancy outcomes. We show dams post-ischemia-reperfusion (IR) exhibit endothelial dysfunction, whereas dams allowed longer recovery time (6 mo) or treated with sildenafil exhibit normal endothelial function during pregnancy. These findings identify endothelial dysfunction as a mediator of adverse pregnancy outcomes after AKI and highlight vascular recovery, through time or targeted intervention, as a potential preventive strategy.
