Social Media for Prostate Cancer Education and Outreach: Descriptive Insights from a Multi-Platform Campaign

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide and disproportionately affects Black men, underscoring the need for scalable and culturally responsive education and outreach. The Inclusive Cancer Care Research Equity (iCCaRE) for Black Men Consortium uses X/Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to disseminate information on prostate cancer to Black men and their communities worldwide. This study presents an observational, descriptive analysis of iCCaRE’s social media campaign implementation, reach, and platform-level engagement using platform-derived data collected from 2023 to May 2026. The campaign generated 126,300 impressions and 11,339 engagements on X/Twitter, 14,600 views and 1,301 subscribers on YouTube, and 285 followers on Facebook. The engagement patterns varied by platform. On YouTube, humor-based content, including the Prostate House of Humor, generated the strongest engagement, suggesting that storytelling and humor may help sustain audience attention. On X/Twitter, the Knowledge Is Power of the Day series performed strongly, highlighting the value of frequent, short-form, and plain-language education. On Facebook, event promotion content, including the Science of Advanced Prostate Cancer Conference flyer, reached the largest audience size. Overall, these findings suggest that social media platforms can support scalable prostate cancer education and outreach, and platform-specific engagement patterns may guide future digital health communication strategies for Black men and their communities.
