Synergizing Onomi Rei Mai and Shalom Theology to Promote Religious Moderation in Indonesia

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The Onomi Rei Mai greeting, pronounced by Ondoafi customary elders in Sentani, Papua, embodies indigenous beliefs in communal harmony and divine representation. This philosophy parallels Christian Shalom theology and peace greetings in other Indonesian religions. This qualitative study examines (1) whether Onomi Rei Mai fosters religious moderation, and (2) its relationship with Shalom theology in cultivating moderation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with twelve key informants—traditional elders, community leaders, and religious figures—and analyzed thematically. Findings reveal that Onomi Rei Mai and greetings across religious traditions share foundational implications for peacebuilding, social justice, and communal security. The synergy manifests in three dimensions: economic sufficiency through collective resource management, harmonious interreligious and interethnic relations, and security for all community members, including immigrant populations (Ramoyo). This convergence impacts local governance and community life, fostering brotherhood amid diversity and mutual prosperity. The study concludes that indigenous philosophical traditions, when integrated with theological peace concepts, offer valuable resources for religious moderation—a key Indonesian national priority. The Sentani case demonstrates that cultural wisdom and religious values can synergize to build inclusive, harmonious communities.
