Towards the design of intelligent architectures for the protection of the Industrial Internet of Things

Type: dissertation
Abstract: Industry 4.0, also known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), represents a new revolution characterised by the convergence of technologies applied in industrial environments. This technological integration gives rise to new applications, optimized industrial processes, and improved efficiency management in manufacturing environments. Futhermore, when paired with the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) paradigm, it enhances these capabilities by reducing costs through network and service virtualization. However, as these contexts expand, they face increased cybersecurity challenges, making IIoT systems attractive targets for cybercriminals. Traditional security solutions often prove insufficient for IIoT environments due to the inherent limitations of IoT devices. Moreover, development strategies used in manufacturing facilities present additional challenges, as organizations tend to integrate these devices without implementing adequate security measures. This reluctance to dedicate more resources to cybersecurity stems from rigid workflow requirements, where system updates, device installations, or security deployments can result in prolonged production interruptions lasting hours or even days. This gives rise to a critical need for new architectures that can secure these environments while maintaining operational continuity, which can be achieved through the strategic deployment of MEC. This thesis advances IIoT security by addressing both attack detection and response protocols, proposing intelligent solutions based on ML techniques that automate the detection of known attacks and are capable of adapting to emerging threats. Similarly, it presents a methodology for forensic analysis after an attack has occurred, improving the effectiveness and practical applicability of incident response procedures. This dual approach strengthens the security of IIoT environments and mantains operational efficiency.
