Abstract: Objectives: Neural mechanisms underlying dream generation and dream recall remain elusive. Individual features and state-like processes influence dream recall. Previous polysomnography (PSG) studies have discovered some potential state-like power spectral density (PSD) patterns, which predict consequent dream recall. We are interested in whether some PSD patterns stay prominent over the whole night on individuals with higher dream recall frequency (DRF). In addition, nightmare and lucid dream frequency are investigated regarding full-night PSDs. Methods: The sample consists of 45 participants, (8 males, 37 females) ranging from age 19 to 42. Participants were divided into 3 groups according to self-reported DRF. They slept the sleep laboratory for one habituation night and one experimental night, when their sleep was recorded using PSG. Associations between DRF and full-night PSDs were studied using covariance analysis, with sex and age as covariates. Similar analyses were computed for lucid dream and nightmare frequency. Results and conclusions: Tentative associations between higher DRF and higher occipital delta and frontal theta during REM sleep were found. Additionally, we found lucid dream frequency to be associated with lower delta and theta powers in multiple regions during NREM sleep. Lower cortical arousal (measured by delta/beta ratio) during REM was also associated with having frequent lucid dreams. In conclusion, some of our findings differed and some were in line with previous state-like PSDs. We emphasize the importance of considering full-night neural correlates in accumulating a deeper understanding on dreams, nightmares and lucid dreams.
