Abstract: This article offers a critique of the lord and bondsman scene from Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (2004[1807]). The scene depicts the struggle between these two protagonists for recognition and material possessions. The outcome of the struggle, according to Hegel and his interpreters is life changing for the protagonists. They gain self-consciousness or awareness. The Lord and the Bondsman recognise that they are essential to each other, both for forming their respective identities as well as for their material subsistence. They realise that they are in other words interdependent. By reflecting on the figure of the escapee slave as well as the act and demands of global social movements I trouble the form of interdependence that emerges through the dialectical struggle.
