Dynamic reconstruction of electrocatalysts: rethinking the structure–activity relationship

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Deciphering the structure–activity relationship (SAR) of electrocatalysts has long stood as the core focus of electrocatalysis research. Nevertheless, traditional SAR investigations are mostly built upon the pristine static structure of catalysts, while overlooking the electrochemical reconstruction that occurs under actual working conditions. Such dynamic structural evolution creates substantial discrepancies between statically derived SAR frameworks and authentic catalytic reaction behaviors. Therefore, exploring the reconstruction behavior of catalysts under actual working conditions is crucial for ensuring catalytic reaction performance and providing theoretical support for practical industrial applications. In this review, we systematically elaborate on the basic theory of reconstruction of electrocatalysts, including its definition and classification, characterization methods, triggering factors, and typical dynamic reconstruction process of various catalysts. And then, we deeply analyze the inherent limitations of traditional static SAR research, propose strategies for constructing dynamic SAR that take reconstruction behavior into account, and put forward strategic directions for the design of next-generation catalysts with both high efficiency and stability. Our goal is to establish a forward-looking roadmap, clarify the reconstruction mechanism of electrocatalysts in electrochemical reactions, deepen researchers' understanding of the dynamic evolution mechanism of electrocatalysts, and provide theoretical guidance for the precise and rational design of high-efficiency electrocatalytic materials.
