Pathways of the Impact of Neighbourhood Environment on Cognitive Function Among Chinese Older Adults: A National Survey
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the mechanisms through which neighbourhood environment influences future cognitive function in older adults, with a focus on examining the mediating role of emotional indices and baseline cognitive function. Methods: Based on data from the China Longitudinal Study of Ageing Society (CLASS) in 2019-2020 (Wave 3) and 2022-2023 (Wave 4), a sample of 6,164 participants was included. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was conducted using Mplus 8.3 to analyse influence pathways. Results: The 2020 neighbourhood environment had no direct effect on 2023 cognitive function but exerted indirect effects via three pathways: Independent mediation by the 2020 emotional index; Independent mediation by the 2020 cognitive function; Chain mediation between the 2020 emotional index and cognitive function. Conclusions: The long-term impact of neighbourhood environment on older adults' cognitive function is primarily mediated through emotional well-being and baseline cognitive status. Efforts should focus on enhancing age-friendly community development and providing emotional support, thereby promoting healthy ageing through upstream interventions.
