Objective: This study aims to explore the relationships among fear of missing out (FoMO), social self-efficacy, and short-form video addiction in college students, and to examine the mediating role of social self-efficacy. Methods: In this study, the Fear of Missing out Scale, the Social Self‑Efficacy Scale, and the College Students’ Short Video Addiction Scale were administered to 401 undergraduates from a university through a questionnaire survey. Results: (1) College students reported relatively high levels of fear of missing information, but relatively low levels of fear of missing situations. Among the dimensions of short video addiction, loss of control and inefficacy were the most prominent, while social self‑efficacy was at a moderately above‑average level. (2) Female students scored significantly higher than males on fear of missing out and its sub‑dimension (fear of missing situations), as well as on short video addiction and its sub‑dimensions (withdrawal, loss of control, and inefficacy). In contrast, males scored significantly higher than females on social self‑efficacy. (3) Fear of missing out was positively correlated with short video addiction, negatively correlated with social self‑efficacy, and social self‑efficacy was negatively correlated with short video addiction. (4) Social self‑efficacy played a partial mediating role between fear of missing out and short video addiction. Conclusion: Social self‑efficacy played a partial mediating role between fear of missing out and short video addiction.
