Rethinking Vaccine Conversational Agents: When Balanced Dialogue and Independent Sources Outperform Professional Advocacy

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This research explores how to build trust in AI conversational agents designed to discuss HPV vaccination, especially among vaccine-hesitant individuals. The effectiveness of these AI agents varies, suggesting that establishing credibility is a crucial factor for their success. Grounded in the Misinformation Receptivity Framework, the study posits that trust is influenced by the perceived source and the nature of the information provided. To investigate this, the study compares user trust in three distinct AI agents.
