Sumerian Base-60 System and Plimpton 322: Pre-Pythagorean Trigonometry — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Sumerian base-60 (sexagesimal) system enabled precise arithmetic, trigonometry, and square root algorithms, with Plimpton 322 revealing a pre-Pythagorean trigonometric table based on exact ratios. MATH: - Base-60 positional system: 60 distinct digits, place values as powers of 60 (60^0, 60^1, 60^-1, etc.). - Plimpton 322: generates Pythagorean triples (a^2 + b^2 = c^2) via parameters p, q (p>q, coprime, opposite parity): a = p^2 - q^2, b = 2pq, c = p^2 + q^2. Ratios on tablet correspond to sec^2(θ) = (c/b)^2, with θ from ~30° to ~45°. - Square root algorithm (Babylonian method): iterative x_{n+1} = (x_n + S/x_n)/2, converges quadratically to √S. - Key constants: 60 (base), 1/60 = 0.01666..., 1/3600 = 0.0002777... CONNECTION: - Base-60 directly links to geometric circle division (360° = 6×60), enabling precise angular measurement. - Plimpton 322 ratios (e.g., 1.9834, 1.9492, 1.9189) approximate secant values; these relate to golden ratio φ = 1.618... via Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
