Urinary UDP-sugars provide actionable prediction of acute kidney injury in cardiac surgery patients
Year: 2026

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in patients with open-heart surgery, but early diagnostics and therapies are limited. This study identifies a proinflammatory pathway activated during cardiopulmonary bypass. UDP-sugars are ligands of the P2Y14 receptor that appear during surgery in the urine of patients with AKI, predicting its onset. Patients with elevated UDP-sugars exhibited higher urinary inflammatory markers. Thus, the UDP-sugar/P2Y14 axis may serve as an early predictor and therapeutic target for cardiac surgery-related AKI.
