Abstract: FINDING: Discovery of quasicrystals with forbidden five-fold rotational symmetry, enabled by Penrose tiling and the golden ratio, disproving the classical crystallographic restriction theorem. MATH: - Crystallographic restriction theorem: periodic lattices in 2D/3D allow only 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 6-fold rotational symmetries. - Five-fold symmetry requires aperiodic order, realized via Penrose tilings with inflation rules based on golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. - Key ratios: φ, 1/φ = 0.618, φ² = 2.618, φ⁻² = 0.382. - Quasicrystal diffraction patterns show sharp Bragg peaks with five-fold symmetry, indexed by integer combinations of basis vectors in a 5D hypercubic lattice projected to 3D. CONNECTION: - Geometric harmony: Penrose tilings use two rhombi (acute angles 36° and 72°) whose area ratio is φ. - Five-fold symmetry is directly linked to the golden ratio via pentagon geometry (diagonal/side = φ). - Base-60 connection: 36° and 72° are multiples of 12°, a divisor of Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
