The Five Platonic Solids: Uniqueness from Geometric Constraints and Symmetry — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: The five Platonic solids are the only convex regular polyhedra, arising from constraints on vertex figures and face angles, with molecular geometry reflecting their symmetry groups. MATH: Euler's formula: V - E + F = 2. For regular polyhedra: {p,q} where p = sides per face, q = faces per vertex. Constraint: 1/p + 1/q > 1/2. Solutions: {3,3} tetrahedron, {4,3} cube, {3,4} octahedron, {5,3} dodecahedron, {3,5} icosahedron. Dual pairs: cube↔octahedron, dodecahedron↔icosahedron, tetrahedron self-dual. Symmetry groups: tetrahedral (order 12), octahedral (order 24), icosahedral (order 60). Edge ratios: dodecahedron edge/diagonal = 1/φ ≈ 0.618; icosahedron edge/circumradius = √(10+2√5)/4 ≈ 0.951. CONNECTION: Dodecahedron and icosahedron embed the golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. Their symmetry group (icosahedral, order 60) relates to base-60 arithmetic. Crystallographic restriction: only 2-, 3-, 4-, 6-fold rotational symmetries in periodic lattices; 5-fold appears in quasicrystal Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
