Icosahedral Symmetry: Simplicity, the Golden Ratio, and Optimal Volume — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: **FINDING:** Icosahedral symmetry group \( I_h \) (order 120) is simple, and its rotational subgroup \( A_5 \) is the smallest non-abelian simple group. The group is intimately linked to the golden ratio \(\phi\) and appears in optimal volume-to-surface ratio problems (e.g., icosahedron is the Platonic solid with maximal volume for given surface area). **MATH:** - Group order: \(|I_h| = 120\), rotational subgroup \(I \cong A_5\) of order 60. - Simplicity: \(A_5\) is simple (no nontrivial normal subgroups). - Golden ratio: \(\phi = \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 1.618\), and its reciprocal \(\phi^{-1} \approx 0.618\). - Icosahedron coordinates: vertices at \((\pm1, \pm\phi, 0)\) and cyclic permutations. - Volume-to-surface ratio optimization: For fixed volume, the icosahedron minimizes surface area among Platonic solids; ratio involves \(\phi\). **CONNECTION:** - The golden ratio \(\phi\) appears in the icosahedron's geometry (edge length vs. circumradius). - The group \ Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
