A Compact Orientation-Link Gauge Sector in a Finite-Response Coherent Medium: Photons, Gauss-Law Defects, and Microscopic Closure Tests

Type: preprint
Abstract: This paper develops a microscopic effective construction in which a finite-response coherent medium with an internal orientation sector can support an emergent compact U(1) gauge structure without assuming the Maxwell field or known charged particles as primitive inputs. Starting from a normalized local orientation field, the analysis rules out several simpler photon candidates, including the scalar density-phase mode, a symmetric constitutive tensor, and a strict local Berry connection. It then identifies an orientation-bond Hubbard-Stratonovich field as the surviving route to a collective link variable. In a deconfined Coulomb phase, the resulting compact-link theory contains two transverse photon modes, while a separate gapped orientation-defect field provides integer Gauss-law sources satisfying: G_a = (div E)_a - n_a = 0 The compact-lattice normalization gives: c_gamma = (a_* / hbar) sqrt(U_E K_B) alpha = (1 / 4 pi) sqrt(U_E / K_B) This separates the photon propagation scale from the electromagnetic coupling strength. Restricted microscopic closures are then tested without using the measured fine-structure constant as an upstream input. A weak two-complex-scalar loop benchmark and a same-gap perturbative ring-exchange mechanism fail quantitatively, while constrained U(1) systems provide an external existence benchmark for a strongly softened divergence-free electric response. The charged defect is also shown to be conditionally compatible with Pauli algebra, a first-order Clifford/Dirac closure, and tree-level g = 2. The untwisted source remains bosonic. A Z2 parity/framing construction can support a fermionic endpoint, but its microscopic selection remains open. The paper therefore presents a falsifiable route toward emergent electromagnetism and charged matter while clearly separating derived, conditional, constructive, and unresolved elements.
