The impact of positive friends on adolescent development: Findings based on cross-sectional and longitudinal data

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: With reference to the positive youth development (PYD) perspective, the present study investigated the role of peer influence on the development of adolescents based on a cross-sectional ( N = 2,702, 47.7% girls, M Age = 14.72 years) and a longitudinal survey ( N = 849, 49.3% girls, M Age = 14.65 years). Social network analysis and cross-lagged panel network analysis (CLPN) were used. Results showed: (a) perceived peer PYD attributes had a significant influence on the participants’ PYD attributes; (b) perceived peers’ recognition for positive behavior and beliefs in the future were the bridges with the highest potential of promoting participants’ positive development; and (c) emotional competence and behavioral competence were mostly sensitive to peer influence. Three of the strongest cross-lagged bridging associations of peer influence were also identified. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
