The Philosophy of Humanity and Destiny between Rationalism and Theological Vision: Abu al-ʿAlaʾ al-Maʿarri and Dante Alighieri as a Comparative Model

Abstract This study explores the philosophy of humanity and destiny through a comparative analysis of Abu al-ʿAlaʾ al-Maʿarri and Dante Alighieri, two of the most prominent literary figures to address questions of human existence, death, resurrection, and the afterlife from two distinct intellectual perspectives. The study seeks to examine the relationship between al-Maʿarri's rationalist orientation and Dante's theological vision, while analyzing how each author articulated his philosophical and intellectual conception of humanity and its ultimate destiny after death. The significance of the study lies in its comparison of two of the most influential literary works with profound philosophical and spiritual dimensions: Risālat al-Ghufrān (The Epistle of Forgiveness) and The Divine Comedy. Each work reflects the intellectual and spiritual experience of its author, while both engage with the themes of death, resurrection, and the final destiny of humanity. Despite these shared concerns, they differ fundamentally in their religious and philosophical foundations. Al-Maʿarri's vision is rooted in an Islamic worldview characterized by rational contemplation, whereas Dante's perspective is grounded in Christian theology and its systematic conception of the universe and the divine order. The central research problem is to identify the points of convergence and divergence between the intellectual approaches of al-Maʿarri and Dante in their treatment of the concepts of humanity and destiny, and to demonstrate how their respective religious and philosophical traditions shaped their literary and intellectual visions. The study further aims to analyze the philosophical and intellectual dimensions embedded in both texts and to examine the influence of their historical and cultural contexts on the formation of these perspectives. The research adopts the comparative method, analyzing the literary and philosophical texts of both authors while examining the historical and intellectual contexts in which they were produced. Through this approach, the study seeks to reveal the artistic and philosophical techniques employed by each writer in expressing his understanding of human existence and humanity's ultimate destiny.
