Mixed-orientation Marriage: A Concept Analysis

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: Mixed-orientation marriage (MOM), a significant global concern, is defined as a legal union between partners of differing sexual orientations. Despite growing research, a conceptual understanding of MOM is needed to provide effective healthcare delivery. For this purpose, concept analysis was employed using the eight-step method by Walker and Avant. Methods: An organized search of five databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, LGBT Life, PakMediNet) was utilized to explore the concept of mixed-method orientation, yielding 42 relevant articles for analysis. Results: The core attributes of MOM are: (a) a legally recognized marriage, (b) between partners with different sexual orientations, and (c) often involves the concealing (knowingly or unknowingly) of one spouse’s sexual orientation. Key antecedents include familial/societal pressure, internalized shame/identity conflict, relational factors, and structural constraints. Consequences are based on concealment or disclosure of sexual identity. Conclusion: MOM is a multifaceted concept with serious implications for the health and wellness of the affected couples. The analysis highlights strategic interventions and treatment for those involved in MOMs.
