Evaluating performances of opioid, stimulant, and alcohol use disorder screening tools in prison

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a 3-item opioid use disorder (OUD) screener, as well as the 11-item DSM-5 OUD Symptom Checklist among people who are incarcerated. Our primary reference standard will be the CIDI SAM Checklist with an additional item on MOUD history, administered by research staff. As a secondary analysis, we will examine performance against a non-self-report reference standard: OUD history as evidenced from medical records. We will also examine the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test – Consumption (AUDIT-C), Alcohol Symptom Checklist, a brief stimulant use disorder screening tool, and the Stimulant Symptom Checklist against a primary reference standard of the CIDI-SAM. The study will be conducted in the Washington State prison system.
