The Whirlwind and Fine-Tuning: The Limits of Reason before Cosmic Design

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This article proposes a rereading of the whirlwind discourse in the Book of Job (Job 38–41) in light of three contemporary discoveries: the fine-tuning of cosmological constants, the thermohaline regulation of the oceans, and the epistemological debate on the multiverse. It argues that 21st-century science, far from dissolving the theological question, has quantified with mathematical precision the improbability of a habitable cosmos, shifting the boundary between scientific explanation and design inference to a new methodological plane. In its most expansive inflationary form, the multiverse hypothesis currently operates at the limit of empirical testability, functioning more as a metaphysical explanatory principle than as a falsifiable physical hypothesis. The essay suggests that modern astrophysics and Earth system science have returned, unintentionally, to the very questions posed from the whirlwind.
